On 11 February, we’re taking the opportunity to shine a spotlight on the women at Ecotricity working in science, technology, engineering and technical roles. From windmill technicians to solutions architects, their expertise is helping to drive the transition to a greener, more sustainable energy system.
What is International Day of Women and Girls in Science?
The International Day of Women and Girls in Science was established by the United Nations in 2015 to recognise and celebrate the critical role women and girls play in scientific research and innovation.
The day aims to:
Inspire future generations to pursue careers in science and technology
Highlight female role models in STEM
Promote greater gender equality within scientific and technical fields
By celebrating this day, organisations around the world help create a more inclusive scientific community.
How we put this into practice
At Ecotricity, we actively support and develop women in scientific and technical roles. For example, recently we welcomed a young woman into our Operations and Maintenance team through an internship programme, where she gained valuable hands-on and analytical experience.
During her placement, she analysed power losses in wind turbines using SCADA data, producing detailed reports that identified root causes and provided recommendations to improve energy yield. She also assessed the potential impact of nearby building developments, estimating future energy needs for operational windmills.
Alongside this analytical work, she gained practical, on-site experience across wind parks, sun parks and battery storage facilities. This included conducting site audits and even climbing windmills, providing a comprehensive, real-world understanding of renewable energy operations.
