There’s no pressure to buy at any time, even when a full design has been created specifically for your home.
Most homes don’t need planning permission for solar panels. This is because many solar panel installations are allowed under Permitted Development Rights.
However, extra rules do apply if your home is in a conservation area or is a listed building. MakeMyHouseGreen can help check what applies to your home and work with your local authority where needed.

The installation takes a minimum of two days, depending on the size and complexity of the system. The entire process, from design to generating your own green electricity, takes six to eight weeks in total.

How we calculate potential savings
The £1,000 figure is based on MakeMyHouseGreen’s modelling of approximately 1,500 UK homes. Their model calculates expected solar generation, household electricity consumption and potential savings across more than 17,520 intervals annually.
Calculations take account of the proposed solar and battery system, annual electricity use and when energy is typically used throughout the day. Across the homes analysed, the average modelled annual saving was £1,440.29. We use the lower figure of £1,000 in our marketing as a more conservative illustration.
Your actual savings may be higher or lower and will depend on factors including your property, system specification, electricity consumption, usage patterns and energy tariff.
*£1,000 is an indicative annual electricity bill saving, based on MakeMyHouseGreen's modelling of approximately 1,500 UK homes between September 2025 and August 2026.

The average estimated saving is around 1 tonne of CO₂e per year. This relates to emissions avoided through the electricity generated by the solar system and does not represent the reduction in your household’s total carbon footprint. Battery charging or discharging does not itself generate additional renewable electricity and is therefore not counted as an additional carbon saving.
Actual carbon savings will vary depending on the system installed, location, property, solar generation, electricity use and changes in the carbon intensity of UK electricity.
