Global Wind Day on 15 June is an annual celebration of clean, green power from all over the world.

This year’s theme is Our Wind, Our Community, showcasing how communities in Europe are benefitting from wind energy in terms of local opportunity, shared ownership and renewed public spaces.

It’s also about inspiring confidence in wind energy, with stories from across Europe about how communities have come together to help shape projects and strengthen local life through more jobs and more money in the local economies.

Wind power is going from strength to strength

Wind is one of the cheapest ways to generate electricity in large parts of the world. Globally, wind capacity passed 1TW in 2023, reaching 1.3 TW by the end of 2025 – in fact, last year was the best year ever for new wind energy with 165GW added to the total.

To put those figures in perspective, wind now makes up 20 per cent of all electricity consumed in Europe. In the EU, the aim is to reach 34 per cent by 2030 and more than 50 per cent by 2050. In the UK, wind generation increased to 30 per cent of all electricity in 2025, doing its part in hitting a target of 95% clean generation from all sources by 2030.

The benefits of wind power aren't just about fighting climate change. Over 440,000 people work in the wind industry in the UK and Europe alone – and every windmill we build makes us more energy secure. If we can just Break the Link between the price of fossil gas and renewables, the cost to consumers will come down as well.

How much of your electricity is coming from wind right now?

Some days, the wind blows harder than other days. So how do you know how much electricity is being generated at any one time?

The answer is simple – just head to our Live Energy Generation page for all the answers.
