We are delighted to announce a groundbreaking partnership between Ecotricity and Leeds Rhinos, one of rugby league’s most iconic teams.
Through this partnership, we have become the official energy supplier of Leeds Rhinos, aligning our mission to eliminate fossil fuels, with the Rhinos’ commitment to net zero.
The collaboration marks a significant step towards integrating sustainability into the sporting world, showcasing how renewable energy can power communities, teams, and fans towards a greener future.
This partnership marks the latest green initiative Leeds Rhinos have embarked on. The Leeds-based club has already implemented eco-friendly measures like EV charging points at their AMT Headingley Stadium, as well as engaging with the local community on sustainability issues. The club has also set a target to be net zero in their Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 2030 and is on track to have a 37% reduction in their Scope 3 emissions by 2050.
Dale Vince OBE, founder of Ecotricity, said: “Sport is a fabulous way to make the case for sustainability to new audiences. We’ve already brought a green revolution to football at Forest Green Rovers, the world’s greenest football club. By joining forces with Leeds Rhinos, we’re now showing that there’s another way for rugby league as well, inspiring fans and the broader community to embrace green energy. It’s a great partnership to be part of.”
Key features of the partnership include:
Enhanced Sustainability: Collaboration on initiatives to reduce carbon emissions and promote green practices, including hosting a sustainability workshop at AMT Headingley Stadium.
Fan Engagement: Matchday activations and digital campaigns will encourage fans to adopt eco-friendly practices, amplifying Ecotricity’s reach to Leeds Rhinos supporters and the wider rugby league community.
Community Impact: Joint efforts to educate and involve local communities in sustainability initiatives, leveraging the Rhinos’ extensive community programs that touch the lives of 96,000 people annually.
Leeds Rhinos’ Operations Director, Sue Ward, added: “Our commitment to sustainability is integral to who we are as a club. Partnering with Ecotricity allows us to further this mission, creating a model for how sports teams can champion environmental stewardship while engaging with their fans.”
The partnership, launching in the 2025 Super League season, is a testament to how collaboration between businesses and sports can create meaningful change as part of the UK’s wider journey to net zero. With shared goals of decarbonisation and community education, we and the Rhinos are setting the stage for a greener, more inclusive future.
