Our planet is incredible, but it needs our help. This April, join us in celebrating Earth Day, an annual global event that inspires collective action for environmental protection.
As Earthday.org president Kathleen Rogers says, “celebrating Earth Day is often the first environmental action for many.”
What is Earth Day?
The first Earth Day was celebrated back in 1970, when Gaylord Nelson, a US senator, organised a demonstration to raise awareness for environmental issues such as air and water pollution.
It was prompted by an enormous oil spill that occurred fifteen months earlier in the Santa Barbara channel, which is still the largest oil spill ever off the California coast. As a result of national protests, the US Environmental Protection Agency was formed in late 1970.
Over the years, Earth Day has become increasingly important. In fact, the 50th anniversary in 2020 was the largest online mass event in history. Can we beat the record this year?
When is Earth Day 2025?
This year’s Earth Day is on Tuesday 22 April 2025.
Last year, the focus was on Planet vs Plastics. We joined the call to demand a 60 percent reduction in the production of all plastics by 2040.
The theme for this year is Our Power, Our Planet, asking everyone around the world to get behind renewable energy and triple the global generation of green electricity by 2030.
Moving to renewable energy is one of the biggest things we can do to help fight the climate crisis. It also lowers air pollution, preventing serious lung and heart diseases. Renewable energy is also the cheapest power option in most parts of the world and helps to create jobs for local people.
How can I celebrate Earth Day?
Here are our top eight tips for making a difference:
Switch to Ecotricity’s 100% green energy – All our electricity is made from the sun and wind. What makes us different from other energy companies, including the ‘green’ ones, is that we’re not-for-dividend. Instead, we use the money from our customers’ bills to build new sources of green energy - “Bills into Mills”
Swap four wheels for two – Ditch the car and get on your bike to reduce air pollution and your personal carbon footprint. Walking and taking public transport are other great options. The transport sector is the second largest emitter of greenhouse gas emissions worldwide, pumping out 8 billion metric tons into the atmosphere each year.
Drive electric – Bad weather and don’t fancy the bike? If you own an electric vehicle, why not switch to our special EV tariff and stay in control of your energy costs.
Install solar panels on your roof – We’ll soon be launching an exciting new product – our Smart Export Tariff (SET), which will offer a generous payment for every kilowatt hour of energy you export to the grid. We’ll have more info very soon.
Sign petitions – Our partner Friends of the Earth are doing great work to support the goals of Earth Day. Sign their petitions today and help raise awareness of environmental issues amongst politicians.
Pledge an Earth Action on social media – Share your actions this Earth Day by using #EarthActionDay and tagging @earthdaynetwork to encourage others to join the movement. For more information about how to pledge your action on social media, head to the Earthday.org website.
Save energy – Remember to turn off lights and your appliances at the socket to save both energy and money. The Energy Savings Trust estimates that the average household in the UK spends £55 per year on appliances left on standby.
Looking out for our planet isn’t just a one-day event. Switch your home to Ecotricity and power your life 365 days a year with 100 percent green energy.
