Fully Charged Live, the electric vehicle and renewable energy event of the year, took place at Silverstone earlier this month. Our IT Infrastructure Engineer, Gareth Edwards, manned Ecotricity’s display at the show, and talked EVs, sustainability, and the Nemesis, the UK’s fastest electric vehicle.

Fully Charged Live was a really good glimpse into what’s happening now in the world of electric vehicles and how we’re shaping up for a future Britain where EVs are the number one choice on our roads.

The Ecotricity stand was always busy over the course of the weekend, so we had the chance to engage with quite a crowd. We had a huge mix of questions and feedback from the public about what we do, and about our plans for the future – people are really interested in what we’re doing to make sure EVs are the choice of travel for Britain.

We had lots of discussion about the uptake of electric vehicles, and it was great to hear that the popularity of EVs has increased. However, I was surprised by the amount of people who weren’t aware of the options to charge their EV at home.

Here’s our plug, if you’ll excuse the pun … I really think Ecotricity’s Fully Charged bundle is the best deal for home charging at the moment: you can get a Rolec home charger installed for just £99, and you also benefit from half price use of the Electric Highway. People loved the idea of it.

I came across some really clever chargers at the event, including the Zappi, which (if you don’t have home battery storage), exports any unused home solar generation direct to your electric car. The result is a trickle charge (depending on conditions), resulting in emission free, zero cost driving for most days.

The event was a great showcase for EVs and demonstrated the amazing progress that’s been made in the availability of electric vehicle charging. It’s come a long way since we launched our Electric Highway in 2011. Our network now has 300 electricity pumps nationwide, so you can travel the length and breadth of Britain completely emissions free.
